Rav Berland’s prayer to clean the house of chametz

My friend mentioned how much this prayer is helping her deal with ‘Pesach overwhelm’ this year.

I didn’t even start cleaning yet….

(Hope that makes you feel better!)

Here is the translation in English (kudos to the husband, and thanks to the friend):

PRAYER BEFORE CLEANING THE HOUSE FROM CHAMETZ

Cleaning the house purifies a person completely

Master of the World, who can do anything, and from whom nothing is withheld, grant me the merit to clan and to purify my heart at the time of cleaning from chametz.

Please Hashem, grant me that at the time I clean the house from chametz to clean and to purify my heart from all types of waste matter of chametz which still exist in my heart.

And may I come out from all types of waste matter of p’gam habrit (blemishing the covenant) until I am completely purified.

Please Hashem, grant me at the time of cleaning the house from chametz to purify and refine my heart, from all types of waste matter of impurity and chametz and p’gam habrit.

And may I merit at the time of cleaning the house from chametz to hear anew all of the Ten Commandments, just like at the Giving of the Torah, and fulfil in me the verse, “I will wash my hands with cleanliness and I will surround the altar of Hashem”. And fulfil in me the verse, “and you said a Pesach offering to Hashem”.

And may I always wash my hands, and have the intention at the time of washing to purify the ‘upper hands’, the place where there is chessed and gevurah of Adam Kadmon.

And, at the time of cleaning the house from chametz, may I purify all of the upper 248 limbs and 365 sinews of Adam Kadmon, and may I merit at the time that I purify the house to have the intention to purify the ‘house above’, which is the root of the Cherubs, who are the purpose of heaven and earth, the purpose of the Beit HaMikdash above.

And, through washing the hands with water, one draws down the upper waters of chessed, from the right hand of Adam Kadmon, from where all the chessed of all of the year is drawn, to each thing, to each and every person, to each and every man and woman, and to each and every boy and girl.

Formerly we spoke about the nature of A.I., and you said that it lacks true creativeness that only man with a soul has.
Tonight I tried using Elon “Devil’s Champion” Musk’s Grok A.I. and speaking to it about the flat Earth. And I was amazed at the way in which it seemed to make a real conversation, sounding like it has real understanding; that is far beyond the level of ChatGPT.
How far can such a thing get without needing a soul (not that it could have one)? How can it do this since it lacks one?

It’s an interesting question. There are ‘souls’ even for inanimate matter, like stones and rocks for example – human being can get reincarnated as inanimate matter.

But a human soul is on a totally different level.

Re: the AI, I think it’s a ‘container’, a gashmiut vessel.

Just like a ouija board can get ‘taken over’ by spiritual entities if that’s the intention of the humans using it, so it’s not a stretch to see that the same sort of idea could happen with AI.

But again…. it’s the human being, and their free choice, and their own soul power and spiritual energy which is fuelling all this stuff, for the good and for the bad.

Without the human being’s input, the ‘ouija board’ is just a bunch of letters, it’s inanimate.

        thanks for publishing this prayer.

a.i. large language models are deterministic — given the same random initialization value and the same input, it will produce the same output every time.

of course, it also has the language model — libraries full of human creativity and analysis crunched down to a few gigabytes — about the size of a DVD or 23 chromosomes of a human genome.

there is a tendency to anthropomorphize the AI, when really its output depends on its randomness as much as on its input.
this might help demystify some of the marketing, which clearly seems to be in the direction of people assuming that these algorithms are conscious — or are developing in that direction.

interestingly, the purim story refers to hidden miracles.
randomness is an interesting place to hide a miracle. all the normal processes of physical reality apply, so supernatural interactions would have a rational explanation.

an A. I. trained on folk legends and initialized with random numbers from a smoke alarm, geiger counter, and digital microphone would be literally divination.
to anthropomorphize it would be like trusting a ouije board.

so far the only uses i can think of are to get it to find sources for things. to quote its references.

also, a human good at reviewing other people’s computer code might enjoy correcting its output computer source code. haven’t used it for that yet.

it’s not bad at text-to-speech. (a bit of a different technique.) good for foreign languages. i’ve got it to read russian, polish, and arabic.
