Hitler only wanted peace – Part 2

Continuing the shiur of the Rav.

(You can see Part I HERE)

[Skipping some, where the Rav is talking about the three fates of the Jewish mothers giving birth in Egypt, the ‘sporty’ ones who ran to the field, the ones whose children were rescued from the Nile by angles, and the last group whose kids were taken by the Egyptian and cemented straight into the walls.]

R’ Avraham Elimelech said, I am going to die.

He gave his shtreimel to Barzel, and he gave his staff to Israel Grossman, the father of Yitzhak David Grossman, he told me himself, that he got the staff.

They brought him up on to the ship, he was a Karliner. He was the biggest Admor of Karlin in the world, he used to cry out, and you heard him from 10 streets away, such cries he used to cry, you could hear him 10 blocks away. 10 roads heard his cries.

He came to Meron [on the eve of WW2] and he did such cries, until Tsfat.

Immediately after Tisha B’Av, he travelled to Meron, he got there within two days, to Meron. And he gave such cries, they heard it in Tsfat.

His shamash (attendant) brought him hot milk, they had to serve him hot milk. He ran with the hot milk, Rebbe ir gait avis, ir gait avis. They spoke Yiddish, not Hebrew. Ir gait avis. He said avis ga’an.

Here, you can see the story, the story is here.

They didn’t know the real story, they only brought part of the story, the true story has not been written. I heard it, the real story, from those who were with him, who  brought him the hot milk. He said ir gait avis.

He roared out for six hours, he roared such roars.

[If he] would have travelled to Uman, the decree would have been cancelled.

Only Rabbenu could have cancelled it. Rabbenu said I am responsible for this generation.

[If there had been] two tzaddikim in Uman, the decree would have been nullified.

==

They already knew, that [there was going to be a holocaust].

R’ Yochanan of Karlin said, when Hitler rose to the government, he said we are lost, we are finished. Am Yisrael will be finished, there is no more Am Yisrael.

Everyone was marrying non-Jews, everyone. Everyone was marrying non-Jewish women, no-one was marrying Jewish women. They said there is no more Am Israel, it’s finished. Am Yisrael is finished.

==

But, here, on Mount Zion, ‘there will be a remnant’.

The Choftetz Chaim said [this]. [Before his death] the Chofetz Chaim said there is going to be a Shoah, and he saw that he [Hitler] rose up to the government, he knew. All the tzaddikim knew what was going to happen.

He said, on Mount Zion, there will be a remnant.

Whoever is in Eretz Yisrael, will live. In Europe, no-one is going to stay alive.

The Chofetz Chaim said this.

==

Many Tzaddikim [knew there was going to be a Shoah].

R’ Yehiel Meyer of Ostrovzha fasted for 40 years, in order to try and cancel the decree. So, the tzaddikim knew.

The tzaddikim knew, that there was going to be a terrible decree, and they said to run away. Nobody listened to them. They said, it’s stam, it’s make believe, it’s a day-dream.

So who [R Avraham Elimelech of Karlin] came to Eretz Yisrael.

He alighted from the ship – stop singing! He said. Cry out!

The long-hoped for moment had arrived, the saw the Rebbe alighting, R’ Avraham Elimelech of Karlin, on the beach, he got down at Haifa, on the holy ground – no, it was in Tel Aviv. The port at Tel Aviv. They had to drop anchor outside the port, because it was impossible to come closer. It wasn’t really a port, everything was sand. Everything was choppy water. The boat was stuck there.

And everyone started to dance.

The Rebbe came! R Avraham Elimelech of Karlin arrived!

They’d already announced [in Germany] that they were going to destroy the Jews. Everybody already knew this. Everyone came, and and 10,000 chassidim started dancing and singing on the beach, at Tel Aviv, between the waves, between the rocks. Everything was full of rocks, they still hadn’t taken the rocks away.

Slowly, slowly he left, with the oars bringing the rowing boat forward, he was coming closer and closer each second, and the moment arrived. The most yearned for moment, the most dramatic moment that could be, that they’d been waiting for since the creation of the world.

The most wonderous moment, such a time hadn’t happened since the creation of the world.

==

The Rebbe descended onto the beach – and everyone was jumping and dancing and singing, and jumping.

Everyone was on cloud nine, now there was such dancing as had never been seen since the world was created. And he yelled out, stop!

There is going to be a holocaust! You don’t understand what is going on here, at all!

Why did I come? To do ‘dancing’ with you?! Let us go to Meron, and we will cry out there.

==

And the Rebbe, [R’ Avraham Elimelech] was ashen-faced, white, white like a wall, like snow.

And the whole community still didn’t understand what was going on here. Nobody believed, that there was going to be a Shoah.

They said, it’s stam, just words. It’s stam, he just wants the young people to follow him.

Everyone explained [Hitler’s] words away, in a different way. He said I am going to destroy the Jews! ‘Peace’ means you are going to destroy the Jews! If you want peace, then annihilate the Jews! You want a ‘new world’, then liquidate the Jews.

Nobody paid attention. They said it’s just words.

==

He [R’ Avraham Elimelech] was so white, deathly white, ashen-faced, like a wall.

Suddenly, he cried out: There is going to be a Shoah, you don’t understand what is going on here. I didn’t come to dance, I didn’t come to sing, and I didn’t come here to visit people and give them chizzuk. No, no, it’s not a time for singing.

Stop singing, stop hanging around, stop jumping, this is not Shuvu Banim here. Stop! I came here to cancel the terrible decree.

There is going to be a decree that no Jew will remain in Europe!
