Gedalia’s murder, and the measles – more comments from the Rav

Shavua Tov!

I got up to another interesting part of the shiur I’ve been translating, and I was debating whether to put it up here, because I am feeling a little ‘uncomfortable’ about it, re: the stuff about taking the measles shot.

In the end, I decided I am not the Rav’s gatekeeper, and if he saw fit to say this publically, and Shivivei Or saw fit to publicise this shiur, I also have an obligation to translate it, and to let people come to their own conclusions.

That said, this week there was another shiur where the Rav made more references to the children who have ‘died from measles’ in Jerusalem recently – they seem to have all been Breslov, and all from around Meah Shearim.

To my suspicious mind, this immediately suggested that Breslov kids who ‘aren’t vaccinated’ and who end up in a hospital in Israel are currently in very great danger… from something.

And that the measles shot is very possibly the lesser of a very great evil. But of course, decide for yourself, do some hitbodedut, and come to your own conclusions.

Enjoy!

Yonatan ben Kerach came to Gedalia and said to him, tomorrow, they are going to murder you.

You should know, Bailis the King of Amon [has hired Ishmael ben Netanya to kill you].

He [Gedalia] was the King in Israel, he was a true Tzaddik.

“Ishmael ben Netanyahu[1] is going to kill you.” [Gedalia] didn’t believe it.

So he [Yonatan ben Kerach] took him to the side, to a separate room, and said to him:

“I am telling you the total truth. You think that he [Ishmael ben Netanya] is your friend?! He wants to kill you!”

He spoke to him quietly.

And he [Ishmael ben Netanya] wanted to kill him [Gedalia], and then everyone [left in Israel] would be dispersed, and would go to Egypt.

The whole Jewish settlement [in IsraeL] would be cancelled.

[And so, Yonatan ben Kerach tried to warn Gedalia about Ishmael ben Netanya’s evil intentions].

And Gedalia ben Ahikam said to Yonatan ben Kerach: Don’t keep harping on about this, because you are speaking lies. Liar! Liar! Get away from here, and from me!

[And in the end, Ishmael ben Netanya killed Gedalia, and the Jewish settlement of Eretz Yisrael came to an end.]

So they teach that if a person is told that they are coming to kill him, he needs to be on guard [that it is true].

And also each person needs to vaccinate against the measles, if not, [people are] dying from measles.

Already two died from Shuvu Banim, and two from the [Breslov] Shul [in Meah Shearim], and another one, this is seven.

Everyone is obligated to vaccinate, if they tell a person that he needs to vaccinate, they need to vaccinate.

For the seven who died, the Rebbe said that this is ‘spilled blood’.[2]

A person who doesn’t vaccinate is ‘spilling blood’.

There is here [text missing in original] in Shuvu Banim, to vaccinate the children, not to hit the gabbaim.

FOOTNOTES:

[1] This is the spelling the Rav says here.

[2] Shivivei Or then brings the passage from Siach Sarfei Kodesh, Part 1: 533, that says this:

Rabbenu Ztzl, said: “A person needs to cause every child to stand before pakin [the pox] before a quarter of a year, and if not, he is like a spiller of blood. And even if he lives far from the city, he is obligated to travel for this. And even in a time when the cold is great, to stand the child before the pakin, before [the child reaches] a quarter of a year.
